“The Sound and the Fury: Why YA Lit matters.”

Eric Devine, YA author and high school English teacher, will discuss the importance of using Young Adult literature in the classroom. As an author of gritty, contemporary fiction, Eric draws on his students for his work, and his work informs how he understands his students. He believes that the best way to bridge the gap of engagement and education is by valuing the blossoming field of Young Adult literature, and not devaluing it as a mere stepping stone. There is, and always will be a place for the canon, but that does not preclude reading, discussing, and analyzing YA Lit, in order to build students who can better appreciate capital L, literature.

Eric will draw on both his work as an author and as an educator to present an impassioned argument for why we should all remember the Young Adults that exist not only in our classrooms, but also within ourselves.
