Let’s celebrate our year of exciting PD with professional book talks and pizza as we prepare for summer. Please join us for lively discussions of professional books and articles you might want to put on your summer reading list!

Due to the impending storm, we have canceled our event, English as a New Language and Literacy, which was to be held on Wednesday, March 7th, 2018.

English as a New Language and Literacy
Presenter: Dr. Gretchen Oliver, ENL Teacher Leadership Coach for the GCRTC
Date: Wednesday, March 7th, 2018
Time: 4:30pm-6:00pm
Location: College of St. Rose, Events and Athletics Center, Standish Room A
In this hands-on workshop, participants will look at the interrelationships between literacy practices and English language development for English language learners across the five proficiency levels. They will learn how to use and/or enhance their understanding of the Home and New Language Arts Progressions, as well as scaffolding strategies to meet ENLs at their current proficiency level.
***This event provides CTLE professional development hours (100 required per 5-year period for professionally certified teachers). Fifteen percent of CTLE hours need to be dedicated to language acquisition. Our event on March 7th meets this requirement!!

The Journal of Literacy Research is publishing its 50th volume this year! As part of the celebration, they selected 25 notable articles from volumes 1-49 to highlight. They are sharing these articles on social media, which readers can access for free on Twitter and Facebook. They will post a short summary of the article and a link to access the article on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month between January 11, 2018 and December 6, 2018.

Albany City Area Reading Council is expanding our New Books for New Homes Campaign to become New Books for Families. In collaboration with The Book House, Market Block Books, Habitat for Humanity Capital District, and Troy and Schenectady schools, we are collecting books for Habitat new homes and for families to read to their pre-school children. Recipients will be Habitat’s new homeowners and families of preschoolers at School 2 in Troy and Pleasant Valley in Schenectady. In the 6 years of New Books for New Homes, we have provided about 1500 books to new homeowners. Let’s make our new campaign just as great!!!
